Nadine Bruce and Phillip Walton met over their shared love of the great outdoors.
“We met through the sport of rowing; about half a mile from our wedding venue in the city of Durham,” Nadine, 28, explains.
“We trained together and became good friends over the course of a year.”
The pair stayed in touch after Phillip, 30, moved away for university and after eight years together he popped the question in 2014.
When it came to planning their Scottish wedding, the Durham couple says they had a clear idea of what they wanted, and paying tribute to the bride’s roots was top of the list.
“We didn’t want any bold, garish colours and wanted everything to be really tasteful,” Nadine says.
They added a touch of Scotland through elements such as the bridal bouquet and wedding favours, Phillip’s tartan waistcoat and a whiskey station.
The couple wed on July 30, 2016 at Durham Masonic Hall in front of 87 friends and family.
The celebrations continued at the same venue, which Nadine says had the church atmosphere they were after.
“We loved that it felt like it was steeped in history and different to your average venue, and that we could put our own stamp on it,” she says.
“We wanted a ‘family’ almost village hall feel to our wedding.”
Fresh from their honeymoon trekking around Mont Blanc, the couple says they couldn’t be happier.
“We continue to enjoy the outdoors and sport,” Nadine says.

Self-confessed tomboy Nadine was a picture of femine elegance in her lace-embellished gown from Leigh Hetherington. She teamed it with accessories from John Lewis.
Nadine wanted her wedding flowers to refelct her love of the outdoors and the Scottish countryside.
Custom-made centrepices atop the couple’s wedding cake reflected their love of hiking.
Nadine has good advice for future brides – “Savour every minute and don’t sweat the small stuff,” she says.
The bride says a highlight of the day was bringing all their family and friends together. “It involved our closest family and friends, who happen to be a collection of the world’s finest people,” she says of the big day.
