Michelle McCarthy and Mikey Creed both hail from Cork, Ireland, but found each other on the other side of globe.
“It was St Patrick’s day in 2006, we met in Hyde Park in Sydney, Australia. We were both on a one-year, around-the-world trip with friends, when our mutual friends bumped into each other at the festivities,” Michelle, 33, explains. “My friend and I were looking for somewhere to live and Mikey’s place happened to have a spare room available. It was perfect.”
Although they were roommates within a few days, sparks didn’t fly until they were both home in Cork. “Over the next few months we fell head-over-heels for each other,” says Michelle. They continued their travels together, heading to New Zealand, and then Ireland, “chasing the surf” in a VW campervan.
Mikey proposed on New Year’s Eve, 2013, and the couple spent the next year and a half planning their boho wedding.
“I love DIY and crafting, so I was in my element making decorations for the hotel and marquee,” Michelle says. “I have a keen interest in the environment so tried to be as sustainable as possible by using old materials and upcycling pieces of wood. I even sourced invitations from Botanical PaperWorks that you could plant afterwards to grow wildflowers.”
The couple wed on May 15, 2015 at Fernhill House Hotel in West Cork in front of 190 family and friends. While they had hoped for an outdoor ceremony, the fickle Irish weather forced a last-minute change of plans, indoors. “The rain didn’t dampen our spirits and we managed to get to the beach for some snaps after the ceremony,” Michelle says.
“The day was everything we had imagined – loads of love, laughter with family and friends. Just wish we could do it all over again!”

A beautiful flower crown was the only real adornment boho bride Michelle needed, teamed with a classic pair of Jenny Packham heels.
“We both love being active and the outdoors,” Michelle says of what drew her and Mikey together.
The couple’s much-loved VW camper was a constant theme throughout the boho wedding, even popping up on the wedding cake.
Michelle styled much of the boho wedding herself, reusing and recycling whenever she could.
