When Lucie Beeston and Sarah Pounder fell in love, gay marriage was yet to be legalised in the UK.
“We met when we were at college and got married just over 10 years later. Back then I don’t think we even thought about the future and where we’d be in 10 years’ time,” Lucie, 34, says.
“I feel incredibly lucky that I met her when I did and very grateful that we were able to get married.”
Lucie and Sarah, also 34, held their same sex wedding on November 18, 2014 in front of 150 family and friends at Hackney Town Hall before the celebrations continued at nearby The Russet.
Lucie describes decorating the venue as “a labour of love”.
“We made hundreds of meters of sewn paper garlands in different shapes in navy, mint, pale pink and cream. We also made lots of hanging diamonds in the same colours. They were so beautiful!” she says.
“Our wedding day was a mish mash of all the things that makes us happy – our friends and family, good food, dancing and drinking and was made extra special because we handmade almost everything we needed.”

“I used to see Sarah around in the print room and very much liked the look of her! When I started working in the same bar as her I made it really obvious that I was interested and available,” Lucie says.
“We had a group of friends, male and female, that we called our Bridesbabes. I made each of them a brooch that matched our accessories,” Lucie, a jewellery-maker says. Sarah chose suit pants and a white shirt for the big day, while Lucie paired a dipped-hem skirt with a matching top.
Baby’s breath and succulents were among flowers and foliage used to decorate the reception venue.
