If you’ve decided on a wedding video for your big day, you shouldn’t be disappointed. Not having a video of their day is one of the biggest regrets that other couples face after their wedding day has come and gone.
But when it comes to actually choosing your wedding videographer, we know that things can get a bit tricky. Not only do you have to find someone that you connect with and want to film your day, but you also need to find someone that will film your wedding video in the right style.
You’ve likely already thought about the style of your wedding photos, so now it’s time to think about the style of your video. Your photos and video will go hand in hand to help you remember your day and share the memories with your family and friends, so it’s important to look at consistency when you’re hiring your wedding suppliers.
Most of all though, you want to make sure that you’re going to capture your wedding day in the way that you want to remember it.
Thankfully there are a lot of styles for you to choose from, and most wedding videographers are going to give you more than one option to take home with you. Whether it’s a full-length movie edit or highlight, you’ll be able to find the right style to suit your needs.
But if you are still unsure about what style of wedding video you want, here are a few you might like to choose from.
Traditional and romantic
If you’re after a standard way to capture your day, then a traditional or romantic video is what you should look to. A traditional wedding video will capture the most important parts of your day, such as your vows, speeches and first dance. You can expect clean filming and minimal edits or transitions out of a traditional videographer.
However, while an old-school traditional wedding video would capture the wedding in its duration with minimal editing, leading to a wedding video in excess of a few hours, modern romantic and traditional wedding videos are often edited into a highlights package. So not only do you get the best moments of your wedding already packaged up for you, but you also don’t have to relive that embarrassing moment when you stumbled just after the first dance.
More and more videographers are also opting for the wedding teaser videos. These are a great addition to your social media portfolio and give you the chance to share your wedding with friends and family who are more suited to reliving a few minutes of your big day rather than attending a long viewing session like your parents are likely to want to do!
Cinematic
A cinematic-style wedding video will capture your memories in a bit more of a stylised way. Your videographer will capture not only the important parts of your day, but also the little details that go into it such as your decor, rings, and even some of the pre-wedding activities.
A cinematic wedding video style is more like a movie edit and will be put together with more focus on the production of your wedding day storyline. Your vows and speeches will likely be used with overlayed visuals of the two of you posing for wedding photos or walking around your venue at photo time. These sorts of overlayed shots help create a more stylised video and craft your wedding film into a movie you can sit down with popcorn and enjoy for years to come, without the boring bits.
If you’re after a cinematic wedding video you might still get more than an hour film, but it will be crafted into an entire story with music and your own voice-overs to focus on your day. This is a great option if you’re looking for something a bit more than a simple traditional video.
Documentary
Similar to a cinematic edit, a documentary-style wedding video is going to be longer and more stylised like a movie. However, instead of the feel of a drama film, a documentary edit has a journalistic feel to it. Documentary-style videos often include interviews with the couple and family before they actually tie the knot, giving you the opportunity to get some of those nerves out on camera!
A documentary wedding video style will also go through your wedding day from beginning to end in a more linear fashion, focusing on the process of getting ready through to arriving at the ceremony, exchanging your vows, getting photos done and then kicking off at the reception.
Documentary edits are a great option for couples who are vocal in telling their story and want to be able to share how they felt before the wedding, as well as give one another a surprise when you’re watching it back later on.
Vintage
The last major wedding video style that is widely popular at the moment is a vintage style video. This style is more filtered and can be likened to old-style videos back in the 70s, capturing elements of your wedding day in a specific tone, light and colouring.
Vintage-style videos will suit less wedding themes as a whole but are definitely suited towards rustic, vintage and boho style themes that are already a bit separate from the traditional or classical wedding.
Vintage videos are also very focused on capturing the candid side of your day so are particularly well suited to a lot of candid photography that is very popular at the moment. So if you’re looking a for a more natural stylised look then this is the video style for you.
