American bride Nikki Knight went from being a newlywed to a widow within a matter of hours, after her husband was killed having stopped to help a stranded motorist on Saturday evening.
The Chicago couple were on their way to their hotel from their wedding reception when the gallant groom, 49, stopped to help a stranger whose car had slid off the road.
Local police say that both the groom and woman he was helping, Linda Darlington, died after being struck by several passing vehicles.
Mrs Knight, a registered nurse, told the Chicago Sun-Times “He said, ‘We’ve got to stop, it’s late and they need help.”
“He was the type of person who was willing to put himself on the line and support you no matter what.”
“I went from a being a newlywed to a widow in less than 48 hours — the highest high to the lowest low.”
