Following years of meticulous research and restoration, Blackfriars boasts authentic and bespoke banners, distinctive antler chandeliers, stained glass windows and large oak dining tables and chairs so you can celebrate your love in a truly unique way

Refined and elegant, many of our modern classic dishes also pay homage to its medieval and historic past. Our popular five course wedding breakfast has been devised by our head chef and showcases the very best cuisine the North East has to offer.

We also have a dedicated team of experienced wedding coordinators and event managers at your disposal and ready to take care of your every need and want to make sure your big day runs smoothly.

Blackfriars was opened in 2001 by Andy and Sam Hook following on from the success of the critically acclaimed Sidney’s Restaurant in Tynemouth. The restaurant is now run by a team of exceptional staff headed up by Group Operations Manager Ruth Terrington, Manager Rebecca Blackith and Head Chef Chris Wardale.

FAQ

Blackfriars benefits from two licences - firstly we are approved by Newcastle City Council for marriages and civil Partnerships in our Banquet Hall and our Tasting Room.

Blackfriars premesis allows us to serve food and alcohol until midnight (though last orders at the bar are 23.30), and also to host live and recorded music as lon as it cannot be heard beyond our boundaries. Live acoustic music workds well in our Banquet Hall, as does recorded music through our in-house sytem, though we are situated in a residential area and therefore cannot allow lous amplified music, live or recorded. And out of courtesy you must as your guests to leave quietly.

We can also serve drink outside until 7pm though again must abide by strict rules about keeping down any noise and being good neighbours.

We recently had our wedding ceremony and reception in the Banquet Hall at Blackfriars Restaurant. From going to view the venue and right up until the actual day the service we received was outstanding. The wedding organiser, Lee, was brilliant. She made the whole process stress free. She was on hand to answer any question we may have had. She made suggestions to help us with menu and drink choices. On the day everything went really well. Lee and the other staff were fantastic. The food was excellent the wine was excellent. In fact the whole day was excellent!! I could not recommend Blackfriars enough for anyone looking for a venue in Newcastle City Centre. All our guests had brilliant comments and compliments and quite a few said that it was the best wedding they had been too!

We held our wedding at Blackfriars. The intimate banqueting hall was a perfect venue for our 30+ guests. Planning with Lee, the events manager, was hassle free and nothing was a problem. The day itself was well coordinated, the service excellent and the food delicious. We have also dined at Blackfriars several times before and always had a memorable meal, for all the right reasons.

We had our (very small) wedding reception here this past spring. The banquet hall is gorgeous, and needs no decorating. This was a bonus for me, since wedding planning is...not my thing. It also helped that Lee basically took care of it all once we'd made our booking, so I didn't have to think of the logistics too much. The guests all commented on how nice the food was. And, at the end of the night, Lee had them make up a special 'medieval sangria' at my request, which was amazing. A few months later, we attended another wedding there, and she made it for us again! Thank you so much for all your help. It was exactly the kind of low-key, intimate thing we wanted
