Before Andrew Li could marry Sheila Nguyen, he had to prove he would do anything for her.
It wasn’t the bride’s doing, but instead a wedding tradition of their culture. The pair, aged 30 and 31 respectively, married at their traditional wedding on July 30, 2016. “The big day started with Andy and his groomsmen having to get past the bridesmaids by undertaking their challenges,” Sheila explains. “The games included balloon popping, noodle bopping, seaweed sucking and passing, cling-film licking, and an all dancing and singing a rendition of Wannabe.”
Luckily Andy passed with flying colours, and the couple then attended a traditional tea ceremony before heading to Friar’s Court in Clanfield, Oxfordshire for the formal wedding ceremony and reception. “The string quartet entertained the guests, along with the surprise framed wedding photographs of all the married guests that we had collected and framed,” says the bride.
Guests were treated to handpicked tea for their favours, garden games and a Lion dance, which is good luck for the couple. “Our wedding day wasn’t just for us, we handcrafted a personalised day dedicated to our beloved friends and family, to say show our love for them,” smiles Sheila.

“I can’t describe that feeling, there’s nothing like it,” Sheila says of getting ready for her big day.
“The flowers were ordered wholesale and myself and the bridesmaids spent a fun evening the night before assembling the bouquets,” explains Sheila.
Guests threw cones of confetti made up of petals Sheila had dried from all the flowers Andy had given her over the previous 18 months.
“I learnt how to do beading and made my own hair piece,” says the bride.
The couple incorporated funny photos to let their guests know where they were seated!
